No one can speak from an informed position about the making of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove without also talking about Fail Safe, which can be characterized as the 'serious version' of a very similar scenario. They were each made in 1964, which is one of the biggest reasons why Kubrick decided to (thankfully) make Strangelove a comedy: to differentiate itself and appeal to an alternate audience. Strangelove was such a comedic success that it pushed Fail Safe into relative obscurity; it seemed people wanted to laugh at the tumultuous events of the 60's rather than cry.

Nonetheless, Fail Safe resonates as a powerful drama featuring great performances from Henry Fonda as the President and Walter Matthau as the cold-blooded political scientist. It's worth a rent.
